Hal is a service journalism reporter at the Idaho Statesman. Their favorite story for the Statesman is a wildfire safety guide. The research for it included connecting and collaborating with several emergency response teams both on a local and regional level. The article itself is concise and informative, but the conversations that happened in the background were filled with unforgettable warmth, kindness and an understanding that their communities deserve access to accurate information.

Before relocating to the Statesman, Hal was an intern staff writer for RooNews, a student-led digital newspaper at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Their work in college mostly focused on investigative and student event reporting, but their love of reporting developed in writing feature pieces. A spotlight on opera composer, author and UMKC alum Mikel Rouse, continues to fuel their journalistic ambitions. They graduated in 2025 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in digital journalism and media.
