Hal is a service journalism reporter at the Idaho Statesman. Their favorite story for the Statesman is a feature (of course) on a Boise tattoo shop owner who turned his space into a roadside attraction and local museum. This article was originally a chase after a P.F. Chang’s horse head. Like all reporting gold, it turned into so much more.

Before relocating to the Statesman, Hal was an intern staff writer for RooNews, a student-led digital newspaper at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Their work in college mostly focused on investigative and student event reporting, but their love of reporting developed in writing feature pieces. A spotlight on opera composer, author and UMKC alum Mikel Rouse, continues to fuel their journalistic ambitions. They graduated in 2025 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in digital journalism and media.

Research never stops for Hal, even outside of work. They love exploring topics on human behaviors, ancient civilizations, theology and more than anything else, extraterrestrial activities. If you’re ever in need of a tin foil cap, let them know. Hal has you covered.

This they enjoys writing outside of work as well. Short stories, poetry and musical composition are all passion pursuits for Hal.
